Clinical Field Experience C: Comprehensive Discipline Management Plan Investigation
Clinical Field Experience C: Comprehensive Discipline Management Plan Investigation. Instructions
Setting clear behavioral expectations and having a plan to respond should those expectations not be met are both essential to establishing a positive school culture. Articulating those carefully crafted behavioral expectations to members of the school community is integral to students’ success in meeting them. Equally important is having a plan to support students who have challenges demonstrating the expected behaviors.
Comprehensively review and evaluate your school’s student code of conduct and discipline management plan in terms of how they both promote student success and ensure social justice, equity, confidentiality, cultural diversity, acceptance, and respect between and among students, faculty, and staff within the school.
Determine how the student code of conduct and discipline management plan are communicated and administered by interviewing 2-3 staff members and reviewing any additional documents and artifacts.
In 500 words, briefly summarize your evaluation of the school’s student code of conduct and discipline management plan, as well as the interview sessions and the additional artifacts you reviewed. Evaluate the policies and their implementation to determine if they are positive, fair, and unbiased. Reflect on the congruence between what is stated and what actually takes place, as well as how these practices align with the school mission and vision statements. (LINK: www.avance.org)
Incorporate PSEL Standard 3 into your summary and the implications this has on your future practice.
While APA style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and PSEL standards should be referenced using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. (ATTACHED)
Setting clear behavioral expectations through a student code of conduct helps establish a positive school culture (Childs, Stoeber, & Tidwell, 2020).1 It is important that such policies are carefully developed and clearly communicated to all members of the school community. Equally crucial is having a comprehensive discipline management plan to support any students who struggle meeting expectations. This plan must ensure social justice, equity, confidentiality, cultural diversity, acceptance, and respect for all.
To comprehensively evaluate the policies at a school, I would interview 2-3 staff members to understand how the code of conduct and discipline plan are communicated and administered in practice (McNeill, Friedman, & Chavez, 2016).2 Reviewing any additional relevant documents and artifacts could also provide insight. It would be important to evaluate if the policies and their implementation are indeed positive, fair and unbiased as intended. There may be incongruence between stated policies and actual practices that need addressing. The evaluation should also consider how the policies align with the school’s mission and vision statements (Avance, 2023).3
The Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) provide a framework for school leaders to develop equitable and culturally responsive practices that support all students’ social-emotional and academic learning (National Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2015).4 Standard 3 in particular emphasizes that effective educational leaders promote the current and future success and well-being of all students and adults. This standard has implications for establishing policies and practices, like the student code of conduct and discipline plan, that are fair, unbiased and supportive of all individuals in a school community.
In conclusion, thoughtfully evaluating a school’s student policies and their implementation using multiple data sources can help determine if revisions are needed to better achieve the goals of promoting student success and well-being through fair, unbiased and culturally responsive practices aligned with the school’s mission and vision.
