Question 1: Crisis versus Disaster
(a) The IRACI (Identify, Report, Assess, Communicate, Implement) tool is a crisis communication planning framework used to manage an incident. The key elements of the IRACI tool are as follows:
Identify: Identify the incident and activate the response plan.
Report: Report the incident to the appropriate individuals and teams.
Assess: Assess the situation to determine the scope and impact of the incident.
Communicate: Communicate the incident to all relevant stakeholders.
Implement: Implement the response plan to mitigate the incident.
For example, if there is a data breach at Nike Inc., the IRACI tool can be applied in the following manner:
Identify: Identify the data breach and activate the incident response plan.
Report: Report the data breach to the appropriate individuals and teams.
Assess: Assess the scope and impact of the data breach to determine the extent of the incident.
Communicate: Communicate the data breach to all relevant stakeholders, including customers and partners.
Implement: Implement the response plan to contain the data breach and prevent further damage.
(b) Another strength of the communications planning approach outlined in HB292-2006 is the importance of clear and concise messaging. Effective communication during a crisis is essential, and the messaging should be tailored to the audience. For example, if there is a product recall, the messaging should be clear and concise, providing customers with specific details about the recall and any actions they need to take.
Question 2: BIA and Disruption Scenarios
(a) Business impact assessment (BIA) is a process used to identify and prioritize critical business functions and processes and assess the potential impact of disruptions. Disruption scenarios are helpful in planning for a BIA as they help identify potential threats and their impact on critical business functions and processes. By analyzing disruption scenarios, organizations can determine the likelihood and impact of different types of disruptions and prioritize their response efforts accordingly.
(b) A relevant example of a disruption scenario for Nike Inc. could be a supply chain disruption. In this scenario, there is a disruption to the supply chain that impacts the availability of materials or finished products. The benefits of disruption scenario planning are that it allows organizations to identify potential vulnerabilities and prioritize response efforts. For example, Nike could identify alternative suppliers or increase inventory levels to mitigate the impact of a supply chain disruption.
Question 3: Recovery Objectives
(a) A recovery objective or metric is a specific goal or target that an organization sets for its recovery efforts. Recovery objectives are used to measure the effectiveness of recovery efforts and ensure that critical business functions and processes are restored within a certain timeframe.
(b) In the context of the disruption scenario and impact assessment described in Question 2(b), a recovery objective could be to restore supply chain operations within 48 hours of a disruption. By setting a recovery objective, Nike can prioritize its response efforts and allocate resources accordingly to ensure that critical supply chain operations are restored within the specified timeframe.
