Providing Person-Centred Care to an Individual in Young Adulthood: A Case Study Analysis

This essay aims to demonstrate how person-centred care can be provided to an individual during the young adulthood stage of the lifespan. The selected case study focuses on a young adult who faces a specific concern that has a significant impact on their life and relationships. By analyzing the case and considering Erikson’s psychosocial theory, this essay will discuss the facilitators and barriers the person may encounter in resolving their concern. Additionally, it will outline strategies for providing person-centred solutions to the individual’s dilemma.

Case Study Overview: Young Adulthood

The chosen case study revolves around a young adult who has recently transitioned from adolescence to young adulthood. The individual’s primary concern is related to the challenges of establishing a career and finding a sense of identity and purpose. The transition to adulthood has impacted the person’s life significantly, leading to feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. Moreover, this concern has strained the individual’s relationships with family, friends, and the community, as they struggle to find their place in the world.

Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory Application

Erikson’s psychosocial theory provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals during different stages of life. In the young adulthood stage, the primary challenge is identity versus role confusion. The young adult strives to develop a clear sense of self and personal identity, which lays the foundation for their future life roles and relationships. In this case, the individual is navigating the process of forming a stable identity while balancing various societal expectations and personal aspirations.

Facilitators and Barriers

Several facilitators and barriers may impact the young adult’s journey towards resolving their concern. Facilitators may include a supportive social network, access to educational and vocational opportunities, and positive role models. These factors can empower the individual to explore their interests and talents, leading to a more confident and purposeful identity formation.

On the other hand, barriers such as limited financial resources, societal pressures, and self-doubt can hinder the young adult’s progress. Negative experiences, such as job rejections or lack of support from family and friends, may exacerbate their feelings of uncertainty, making it challenging to establish a stable identity.

Person-Centred Solutions

As a nurse or midwife, providing person-centred care to the young adult involves understanding their unique needs and aspirations. Active listening, empathy, and respect are essential elements in fostering a supportive therapeutic relationship. Building trust with the individual allows for open communication, where they can freely express their concerns and fears.

To assist the young adult in finding person-centred solutions to their dilemma, the nurse or midwife can encourage self-reflection and self-awareness. This may involve helping the individual identify their strengths, values, and interests. Collaboratively, they can explore educational and vocational opportunities that align with the person’s passions and aspirations.

In conclusion, this case study has highlighted the challenges faced by a young adult during the process of identity formation and career establishment. By applying Erikson’s psychosocial theory, we gained insight into the individual’s journey. The facilitators and barriers that influence their progress were also discussed. To provide person-centred care, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to establish a supportive and empathetic relationship with the individual, encouraging self-reflection and exploration of meaningful opportunities.
